SHINGLES
Asphalt Shingles
The first and most common question is "What is a shingle?"
The manufacturing of asphalt shingles begins with a reinforcing membrane or fabric that is created by using either organic materials called "felt" or fiber glass which is called "mat".
Once the fabric has been created, many layers of asphalt will be used to coat and protect the shingle to make it strong and water resistant.
Next it is covered with flexible saturated asphalt. Additionally, this process also adds in a tougher stabilized asphalt coating. However, the fiberglass shingles don't require a saturated coating; they only use the stabilizing coating asphalt.
Small minerals called stabilizers are added to the asphalt to give the shingle more strength and body.
The surface of the shingle undergoes a process that adhears small granules of crushed rock that are colored and used to protect the shingle from ultraviolet rays.
The term "back surfacing" is used to coat the backside of the shingle with minerals, to keep the shingles from sticking to each other after they have been bundled for shipping.
Finally, a strip of sealant adhesive is applied to the face or back of the shingle for good adhesion during installation. The most common style and type of shingles are made with fiberglass.
Several different shingle types are used in the industry today, and it is beneficial to understand what they are.
Three Tab Strip Shingles: These shingles are referred to as a strip shingle, and consist of one layer of fiberglass and coated asphalt.
Laminated Shingles: These shingles consist of one base layer, and one layer of tabs to create extra thickness. They are commonly referred to as a "three-dimensional" or "architectural shingle.
Mid-Weight Dimensional Shingles: These shingles are simple heavier with an upgraded wind warranty. They offer a more defined look and style while providing a colorful blend of granules.
Heavy-Weight Dimensional Shingles: These shingles are an upgrade form the mid-weight in regards to weight, thickness, shadow lines, color and longevity. The shingle consists of two layers of fiberglass coated asphalt, and one layer of tabs.
